Since its founding in 1955 by Dr. James D. Hardy, the surgical department at UMMC has provided innovative and groundbreaking surgical care. The first human-to-human lung transplant was performed by Dr. James D. Hardy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1963. Mississippi’s only transplant program provides care to those in need of heart, kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants.
