Odi odi! Welcome to Mama Tongo. Mama Tongo teaches Sranan Tongo, the language of Suriname. Good to know: the lessons are in Dutch, so you learn Sranan Tongo from Dutch. The menus are also available in English. My parents are from Suriname, but they never taught me Sranan Tongo. With family, I nodded along to words I didn't have (yet). The language was always there, around me, but never mine. What really struck me: many Surinamese people in the Netherlands don't speak their mother tongue, for different reasons. Partly because they never got the language from home. Often there was a taboo at home on speaking Surinamese to your parents or elders: out of respect, because of the history of slavery, or because parents did this on purpose, hoping their child would learn to speak better Dutch. That gap became this app. Mama Tongo, which stands for mother tongue, is the app I wish I'd had: short lessons that feel like home, without school pressure, with the culture simply included, from the market in Paramaribo to Keti Koti.
