Appartenant au groupe du platine avec le platine, le palladium, le ruthénium, le rhodium et l’osmium, l’iridium est l'un des éléments les plus rares sur Terre. C’est un métal de couleur blanc-jaune, très dur, cassant et dense. Il a la densité la plus élevée de tous les éléments chimiques et un point de fusion élevé (2 454°C). L'iridium est également le matériau le plus résistant à la corrosion que l'on connaisse. Ces propriétés en font un élément particulièrement utilisé comme creuset pour la production de galettes cristallines de saphir pour la fabrication des LED et OLED, mais aussi en électrochimie pour le revêtement des électrodes lors de la production de chlore et de soude caustique. L’iridium, dont le marché est très réduit (inférieur à 10 tonnes par an), est produit très largement en Afrique du Sud, en sous-produit des mines de platine.
