At the same time, federal interest payments have increased by 5% compared to last year, amounting to $1.2 trillion – a historical maximum. Over the past 4 years, federal interest expenses have doubled. At the same time, interest payments received by states and local governments have decreased by 3% year-on-year to $270 billion, which is the lowest level since the beginning of 2023. However, this amount is still $80 billion higher than the level in 2007, before the 2008 financial crisis. As a result, interest expenses at all levels of government – federal, state, and local – as a percentage of GDP have risen to 4.7%, which is close to the maximum values in the last 27 years.
