Field maple (Acer campestre) is very often a constituent part of mixed native hedging but also makes a beautiful, relatively small tree in gardens or as a hedgerow tree and is a useful addition in conservation woodlands.  It’s an extremely hardy tree growing all over England and Wales in all soil conditions and all situations. It is native to the UK (indeed the UK’s only native maple tree), and safe to plant near livestock and horses.  Maple-shaped green leaves take on red tinges in summer which are quite noticeable as you drive along country lanes, and then turn a lovely bright yellow colour in autumn before leaf drop (it is deciduous).
