唐獎漢學獎得主許倬雲院士( 圖片提供／唐獎教育基金會 )       許倬雲院士在一九四九年隨家人來臺，並即就讀臺灣大學，在名師教導下受到良好的史學訓練，一九五七年赴芝加哥大學東方學研究所深造，進入世界古文明史的領域，並研讀西方當代人文與社會科學名著，開拓了思想領域與視野，是臺灣戰後第一代接受西方學術思潮啟蒙的學者，因此在中國上古史的研究上開創了新的解釋與格局，對臺灣的史學發展影響甚鉅。晚年體悟歷史知識向大眾傳播的重要性，戮力於通論著作，深受廣大讀者喜愛。   ●　少年經驗與求學歷程一個史學家的形成多半與成長及學思經歷有所關連，許院士少年時期正值對日抗戰，由於父親工作關係，在荊襄一帶逃避戰禍，遂有機會看見大城市以外小村鎮的傳統農家生活，這讓他在日後的研究中得以注意到政治、社會底層的重要性，及其變動所產生的影響。在臺灣大學歷史系求學時，受到李濟、李宗侗、勞榦、淩純聲、董作賓、芮逸夫、高去尋等等學者的教導，奠定了考古人類學和歷史學的治學基礎，也讓他日後以上古史和秦漢史作為研究重心。 一九五七年，許院士進入芝加哥大學東方學研究所深造，此時的東方學研究所處於黃金時代，匯集了二戰期間從歐洲流亡到美國的頂尖近東考古學者，名師雲集。所裡的重點課程是埃及和兩河流域的古代史，他學到了這些地區的文明發展和變遷，最大的收穫是了解游牧民族與農耕民族之間的關係，啟發內外、你我的觀念，日後處理北方民族進入中原的過程，也引發對黃河流域和江漢流域互動的思考，及兩者融合後如何整合為「天下國家」的格局。在學期間，芝大也是韋伯研究方法的重鎮，他因為研究經濟史、城市史的關係，也研讀了韋伯討論土地制度與官僚系統的理論，對以後的研究有很大的幫助。更重要的是，當時芝大的學風講究眼光宏闊，他的幾位導師沒有一個不是處理大題目的，這對他的研究取向影響甚大。   ●　中國古代三部曲許院士在取得博士學位之後出版了被稱為「中國古代三部曲」的三本著作：《先秦社會史論》（Ancient China in Transition: An Analysis of Social Mobility, 722－222 B.C., Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1965）；《漢代農業》（Han Agriculture: The Formation of Early Chinese Agrarian Economy, 206 B.C.–A.D. 220, Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1980）；《西周史》（聯經，一九八四）。這三部曲所要處理的核心主題是周、秦、漢「天下國家」秩序的形成和轉型。西周開創了從封建走向國家的局面，東周則依從國家體制，走向以國家為單位的發展途徑，此時儒家、法家都各自尋找合理的統治和管理制度，又建立起道德跟倫理的、文化的基本面。最後，漢帝國得天下並且穩定的治理天下。他從比較的角度看，認為這是一個非常重要的歷史發展，歐洲沒有發生過，羅馬沒有，希臘也沒有。 《先秦社會史論》是由他的博士論文增訂而成，他根據《左傳》兩千多位人物的生平，做出了幾千張卡片，逐一作注，排列出人物譜系，以此作為基礎進行階層變動的量化分析，這是中國史研究的創舉。 《漢代農業》是對於傳統中國農業型態構成的社會學分析，用以呈現維持「天下國家」的經濟結構。這個結構是從精耕細作、農舍工業、市場機制、市集網絡、聯通道路發展到全國性的網狀結構。他指出，每一個村落是一個聚落，聚落四周圍都是農田，聚落和聚落之間有一定的距離。這些聚落點狀分布，其中
