Astronomical (imaging) data are generally heavily post-processed, and/or analysed in a complex way. Especially high-contrast observations require specific post-processing methods to remove image residuals that remain after all the sophisticated optical suppression methods. One such method, angular differential imaging, is explained in this video. MPIA scientists directly contribute to the development of modern angular differential imaging methods.

The EHT is an evolving network of telescopes. Observations in April 2017 were carried out with eight observatories in six geographical locations around the globe. For the observing campaign in 2018, one new telescope was added to the array, totalling nine observatories at seven sites. No observations with the EHT array were performed in 2019 and 2020. We plan to add additional observatories to the array for future observational campaigns -- two more are expected to join the array for observations in 2021, totalling eleven observatories at nine different locations around the globe. A system of non-tradable credits that flow between individuals like karma, hence proposed under that name, is a mechanism for repeated resource allocation that comes with attractive efficiency and fairness properties, in theory. In this study, we test karma in an online experiment in which human subjects repeatedly compete for a resource with time-varying and stochastic individual preferences or urgency to acquire the resource. We confirm that karma has significant and sustained welfare benefits even in a population with no prior training. We identify mechanism usage in contexts with sporadic high urgency, more so than with frequent moderate urgency, and implemented as a simple (binary) karma bidding scheme as particularly effective for welfare improvements: relatively larger aggregate efficiency gains are realized that are (almost) Pareto superior. These findings provide guidance for further testing and for future implementation plans of such mechanisms in the real world.

PROFILE:  Marin Soljačić is a Professor of Physics at MIT. He is a founder of a few companies, including WiTricity Corporation (2007), Lightelligence (2017) and Axiomatic (2024). His main research interests are in artificial intelligence as well as electromagnetic phenomena, focusing on nanophotonics, non-linear optics, and wireless power transfer. He is a co-author of more than 300 scientific articles, more than 100 issued US patents, and he has been invited to give more than 100 invited talks at conferences and universities around the world. He is a recipient of the Adolph Lomb medal from the Optical Society of America (2005), and the TR35 award of the Technology Review magazine (2006). In 2008, he was awarded a MacArthur fellowship “genius” grant. He is an international member of the Croatian Academy of Engineering since 2009. In 2011 he became a Young Global Leader (YGL) of the World Economic Forum. In 2014, he was awarded Blavatnik National Award, as well as Invented Here! (Boston Patent Law Association). In 2017, he was awarded "The Order of the Croatian Daystar, with the image of Ruđer Bošković", the Croatian President’s top medal for Science. In 2017, the Croatian President also awarded him with "The Order of the Croatian Interlace" medal. He was a Highly Cited Researcher according to WoS for 2019, 2020, 021, 022, 2023 ,2024 & 2025. In 2023, he was awarded Max Born award of Optica.
