BiographyKenneth A. Perrine is a Senior Engineering Scientist with the Network Modeling Center at The University of Texas Center for Transportation Research (UT-CTR). His research interests include large-scale data analysis, traffic system safety and optimization, intelligent transportation systems for active traffic management, and transportation system usability. His educational background and work experience span two domains: computer engineering (receiving BS and MS Engineering degrees from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA and The University of Texas at Austin, respectively) and civil engineering—transportation (receiving an MS degree from University of Washington in Seattle, WA).In earlier computer engineering work, Ken had focused heavily upon high-performance computing, image processing, usability, and data visualization. After starting his education in civil engineering, he gained experience in traffic modeling for urban corridors and studying microscopic traffic simulation. Afterward, he worked for industry on central signal control software and signal controller firmware.At UT-CTR, he is leading technical activities for projects that offer edge computing, modeling and data analysis experience that are highly relevant to today's transportation challenges. In particular, he has developed methodologies for deploying sensing and data analysis methods for extreme weather events, used artificial intelligence to estimate travel time in urban expressway corridors, established data processes for vehicle detection, and modeled regional transportation networks. He currently maintains lab facilities at UT-CTR for building, testing, and deploying edge hardware.
