79%Rescue high season has officially started with a very successful morning at Cape Cross today. 13 seals could be freed from entanglement. 10 seals were trapped in recreational fishing line, one seal was stuck in a paint bucket ring, another seal was caught in a rope, and the last one was entangled in packing strap. Recreational fishing line gets left behind by both, hobbyist anglers and subsistence fishermen. We are always quick to blame "Big Fishing" for the global marine plastic crisis, but individuals can cause a lot of damage too. It takes only a few grams of plastic to kill a strong and healthy seal, turtle, dolphin or bird. So far, 127 seals were rescued by the OCN rescue team in 2024. There are no statistics how many seals we have missed, and how many individuals from other species have been killed by ocean rubbish.
