99%From News Photographer magazine archives: April 2023 - May is Wildfire Awareness Month, but really, wildfires seem to be year-round these days. It's always wise to remind ourselves how to be prepared to stay safe while covering fires. "Wildfire Insomnia: Living and working at the center of wildfires," by Tracy Barbutes, was published in the Sept-Oct 2020 edition of News Photographer magazine. Also of value and authored by Barbutes: "Irresponsibility could cut off journalists’ access to disasters" advises how to work responsibly while on the scene of a fire, with colleagues and PIOs. The story has gotten the attention of Cal Fire PIOs for its great information about working with media. Barbutes, a visual journalist and writer based near Yosemite National Park, Calif., has deep first-hand experience in wildfire coverage. Barbutes also organized the wildfire safety webinar with Cal Fire that was hosted by the NPPA in June 2022. While the webinar video is no longer available, there are downloadable documents to aid your preparedness. Barbutes can be reached at photos@tracybarbutes.com.
