Blackface-circuit 35-watt head and 2x12” cabinet in factory blonde tolex (curious, isn’t it?) Very clean and all-original save for repro footswitch and speaker cable. This is the last iteration of the Tremolux and 1966 was the last year they were produced. We can only speculate as to why such a late example has blonde tolex and wheat grille cloth…special order? Found a few rolls of material in a closet? But in any case, it’s definitely factory-original, hide glue and everything. We’ve had several commentators say that Fender quit doing white tolex in 1964. And mostly they are right. However, this is the third one we’ve seen and there is another late ’65 Bassman in town that is factory white. Ask older vintage dealers you’ll hear that Fender used up the leftover white tolex in late 1965. As with most manufacturers throwing away usable materials is foolish. Then there is the fact that that white tolex was applied with hide glue. Honestly, nobody would use large vats of hot, stinky hide glue to re-cover vintage Fender amplifiers using the exact technique Fender used in the ‘60s. It does make this rare and look cool. From the well-curated stash of a knowledgeable collector to you. All hardware is present and functional, including the tilt-bag legs and the (ingenious) bracket-and-thumbscrew system for securely attaching the head to the cabinet, and the speakers are the original Oxfords. So, the late version of the Tremolux is a bit more aggressive than the Bandmaster, but not as much as the Bassman, and for a lot of players is a perfect blend of chime and crunch. Apparently Eric Clapton thought so, as he used a late transitional Tremolux with Blind Faith. Electro-Harmonix Founder and President, Mike Matthews and serial inventor Bob Myer go way back. Together, they designed the very first Big Muff and had a working relationship throughout EHX’s storied history. Always innovating, Bob was known to present Mike with updated designs to keep up with available technology of the times. As the process goes, designs get selected and others get put aside and forgotten about. The Big Muff Pi 2 Dual Op-Amp design is one that didn’t make the cut back in the late 70’s and was promptly stashed away in Bob’s files. While interviewing Bob in his old workshop, EHX disciples Josh Scott (of JHS Pedals) and Daniel Danger uncovered this novel circuit design as a hand drawn schematic amongst Bob’s old notes. Josh went to work decoding the original schematic and resurrected the circuit as the Big Muff Pi 2.
