The Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of Memphis invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) for the 2026-2027 Academic Year. This is a full-time, nine-month academic appointment, contingent upon funding. The preferred start date is August 2026, but we will consider requests to begin in January 2027. Applicants must possess a PhD in City and Regional Planning or a similar field by the end of their first semester of employment and have a clear research agenda. The Department is interested in strengthening our teaching and research in the following areas: Graphic design, visualization techniques, and storytelling Participatory action research Historic/ cultural/ neighborhood preservation Feminist urban planning/ Gender and feminist approaches to urban form However, the area of specialization for this search is open, and candidates with research strengths in any area of City and Regional Planning may apply. Candidates must also be able to teach general planning seminars from among our core courses (e.g., Land Use Planning, Digital Visualization & Site Design, Land Use Controls, Planning Theory, Planning the American City) as well as applied planning studios. In addition to these teaching responsibilities, the candidate hired will be asked to contribute to the Department’s ongoing student advising, capstone supervision, and community outreach activities within their area of expertise. The candidate will also have the opportunity to work with doctoral students in the interdisciplinary Urban Affairs PhD program. The University of Memphis is a public, urban-serving Carnegie R1 University.
