The author of the Forty Hadiths, Imam al-Nawawi: Abu Zakaria Yahya bin Sharaf al-Hazami an-Nawawi al-Shafi'i (631 AH–676 AH / 1233 CE–1277 CE) is a renowned Muslim scholar, jurist, and linguist. He is one of the most prominent figures in the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence. Imam al-Nawawi is famous for his numerous works in Fiqh, Hadith, and language, such as Riyad as-Salihin, the Forty Hadiths, and Minhaj al-Talibin. He is described as the "refiner" of the Shafi'i school, and his legal weight is so significant that if the term "The Two Sheikhs" is used in Shafi'i circles, it refers to him and Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i. Born in Nawa, he memorized the Quran at a young age before traveling to Damascus in 649 AH. He spent about twenty-eight years in Damascus, learning, teaching, and authoring books, and headed the Ashrafiyya School of Hadith until his passing in 676 AH.
