Strach przed uchodźcami pomógł partii Prawo i Sprawiedliwość wygrać wybory parlamentarne w 2015 roku. Ówczesna narracja partii była wyraźnie antyimigrancka, co wkrótce znalazło swoje odzwierciedlenie w statystykach dotyczących ataków na tle rasistowskim i ksenofobicznym. Jeszcze w 2018 r. 53 proc. badanych przez Fundację IBRiS stwierdziło, że nie chce uchodźców Polsce. Rok wcześniej nie chciało tego nawet 60 proc. respondentów, a znaczna ich część nawet bardziej dopuszczała wyjście z UE (tzw. polexit) niż wpuszczanie uchodźców do Polski.
