The ribbing is worked in the round on circular needles, while the rest of the balaclava is knitted back and forth in stockinette stitch. At the top, the pieces are grafted together, ideally using Kitchener stitch for an invisible finish. You then pick up stitches around the face opening to knit a ribbed edge.
