Ever since America’s withdrawal of troops from the country, humanitarian partners have been “racing against time to deliver aid and supplies’’ to half of the country’s population that now requires humanitarian assistance to survive. Starting now, we can all pressure members of Congress to call on the administration to unfreeze the frozen funds, relax sanctions, and increase humanitarian aid.

Boko Haram was formed in 2002, as a Sunni islamist sect opposing Western education along with all secular aspects of Nigerian society. Their goal is to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria. ​​ ​​ Over the past decade (2014-2023), AOAV has recorded 134 incidents of explosive weapons use attributed to Boko Haram. Boko Haram are the reported perpetrators of 3,036 civilian casualties (1,175 killed), and 554 armed actor casualties (338 killed). ​​ ​​ Attacks attributed to Boko Haram have been recorded in Nigeria (2,343), Cameroon (310), Chad (299), and Niger (84). ​​ IEDs account for 91% (2,777) of civilian casualties attributed to Boko Haram, in particular non-specific IEDs (2,359 civilian casualties), car bombs (322), and roadside bombs (96). Suicide bombings represent 54% (72) of Boko Haram attacks, and caused 75% (2,278) of civilian casualties. ​​ ​​ The majority of civilian casualties were recorded in Boko Haram attacks on markets, which account for 26% (783) of civilian casualties. Other locations impacted by attacks attributed to Boko Haram include transport-related infrastructure (361 civilian casualties), village (352), urban residential areas (280), multiple urban areas (267), and entertainment venues (259).
