By splitting numbers (step 2) children learn intuitively that the order in a sum is not important i.e. 1+2 = 2+1 = 3, basically how subtractions are related to additions; this is why the method is widely used around the world for children in first grade, such as Belgium and the Netherlands. Once number splitting is mastered, all the other exercises become easy. Little dots under the numbers when doing sums up to 10 provide additional help to children in all the exercises.
