IOH engaging with our WC community Understanding PTSD in First Responders Raising Awareness for Workers’ Compensation Professionals Introduction Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a critical issue among first responders, a group that includes firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and other emergency personnel. The nature of their work exposes them to traumatic events that significantly increase their risk of developing PTSD. For workers’ compensation professionals, including claims handlers, risk managers, and other stakeholders, understanding PTSD and its implications is essential for providing effective support and ensuring the well-being of those who serve on the front lines. June was PTSD Awareness Month, and Institutes of Health was happy to participate in raising awareness around PTSD and how it impacts our first responders. Here are highlights from a recent webinar presented in partnership with WorkCompCentral.com: Panel Insights During an hour-long webinar, our panel delved into critical issues, providing valuable insights from their experiences and first-hand knowledge. Deanna Dotta, Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program Coordinator with the San Diego Police Department weighed in with her perspectives. Dr. Ramsey Ali, Licensed Clinical Psychologist and PTSD Clinical Lead at Institutes of Health, offered his clinical perspective on PTSD and explained how to distinguish between the various types of PTSD and available treatments. Sarah Creighton, retired City of San Diego Assistant Police Chief and Director of Law Enforcement Services at Institutes of Health shared her firsthand experience and keen insights on how PTSD impacts the law enforcement community. Paul Alvernaz, retired Fire Captain with
