You are invited to Unite for Ukraine –  A Musical Benefit, for the people of war-torn Ukraine. The musical performance is on Sunday, May 15, 2022, 7-10pm at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Toronto. Performers include Ukrainian dancers from The Yavir School of Dance, Ukrainian singers from Kalendar, folk singers of Lunar Bloom, and many more. Funds raised will support the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, a non-profit which provides medical supplies, food, and other humanitarian aid to Ukrainian families displaced by the war. Both in- person and live stream tickets can be purchased. Krista Samborsky, artistic director of the Yavir School of Dance, will be putting her choreography talents to use to help Ukraine. Samborsky, who is a second generation Ukrainian, has been devastated by the invasion. “I feel it on a personal level because of my identity,” she says. But participating in the fundraiser is a way to send a message of support to her beleaguered countrymen at home. “The distance between us is great,” she says, “but we feel your pain, and we’ll stand with you all the way to the end.” For journalist and organizer, Vivien Fellegi, the conflict in Ukraine is a déjà vu. In l956, during the Hungarian Revolution, her parents marched to protest the Soviet occupiers, and fled the country when the tanks appeared in reprisal. “This conflict is in my blood,” she says. “That’s why I have to do something constructive about it.” Other musicians contributing to the fundraiser include the David Kroo and Friends pop band, husband-and-wife traditional Middle Eastern vocalists Esmaeel Abofakher and Rahaf Alakbani, and the Marty and Friends bluegrass band.
