Häufiges Husten, ständig aus der Puste und dazu kommt Auswurf: Viele Raucherinnen und Raucher haben sich an die Begleiterscheinungen ihres Zigarettenkonsums gewöhnt. Dabei deuten diese Anzeichen häufig auf den Beginn einer chronisch obstruktiven Lungenerkrankung (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – „COPD“) hin. Fachleute sprechen auch von den sogenannten „AHA-Symptomen“ (Atemnot, Husten und Auswurf). In einem späteren Stadium der COPD können erhebliche Leistungsminderungen und lebensbedrohliche Krankheitsschübe auftreten. Laut statistischem Bundesamt starben 29.400 Menschen in Deutschland im Jahr 2020 an den Folgen einer COPD.
