Description Product Overview The Serena Microphone Kit is a complete condenser microphone solution built around a low-noise OPA-based impedance converter and a precision condenser capsule. It is part of the Sound Sleuth OPA microphone platform, offering a more traditional condenser microphone architecture. Serena builds on the Samantha platform by using a true externally polarized condenser capsule. This requires a dedicated polarization voltage supply, provided by the included DC-DC converter, enabling high-performance condenser microphone operation. Design & Performance Serena builds upon Samantha and takes the platform to the next level. It uses the same OPA-based impedance converter, but replaces the capsule with the the TSC-1, a full 34mm K67-style (center-terminated) cardioid condenser capsule. Like the JLI2555B used in Samantha, the TSC-1 is manufactured in an ISO9001-certified facility. It has been used extensively across production runs with consistent results, enabling reliable and repeatable microphone builds without the need for capsule matching. Because the TSC-1 is a true condenser capsule, it requires a stable polarization voltage. This is generated by the included DC-DC Hex Inverter, powered from the regulated supply on the OPA board, providing a consistent ~80VDC bias voltage. This stability improves repeatability and contributes to a higher signal-to-noise ratio compared to typical condenser microphone implementations. The underlying circuit follows the same design philosophy as Samantha, with a focus on low noise, low distortion, high bandwidth, and high headroom. The use of the Texas Instruments OPA1642 allows the circuit to maintain excellent performance while remaining compatible with phantom-powered operation. Serena is a highly versatile microphone across a wide range of applications. It performs equally well on close, intimate vocals, high SPL vocal sources, and spoken word applications.
