In Mexico, for-profit projects are required by law to compensate for or to repair any damage to environmental resources, whereas research projects rarely include the restitution process in their protocols. In projects where children are the focus of research interests, the challenge is even greater and more complex, requiring methods, techniques, tools, and reflections that take their perspectives into account. The right to consultation with indigenous peoples may change the way research projects are constructed. Concepts such as risk, the right to consultation and restitution highlight the different position of for-profit, research or intervention projects. From an anthropological perspective, restitution is determined by participant observation, as it forces the researcher to change his or her status with respect to the people collaborating in the project. In terms of research with children, the process of restitution can become more complex, as the means by which children provide input are subtle or hidden and there are no institutionalized ways of consulting them. These consultation means must therefore be developed as the needs arise.
