91%I really loved this book. I have been waiting for its release since I started reading the advanced copy we received in the mail. I rarely read memoirs, I don’t usually enjoy them, but how could I resist the title? Bibliophobia - I couldn’t not pick it up. And I am so glad I did. This is a memoir of writing, anguish, depression, growing into oneself, and books and books and books. It’s not often I get a real detailed look into someone's relationship with books - it’s not often I’m prompted to interrogate my own - and it was a wonderful whirlwind of book recommendations and distress. This is not a light story. It begins with the author being institutionalized and ends hopeful but unsure. But it is so worth the read. I don’t have the same relationship with books that this author does. Our relationship is vastly more positive than not. That's not to say every book I've read has been good for me. For one thing, and I don’t think I can say it better than the author, “I am disturbed and irritated whenever I encounter the moralizing claim that the main point of reading…is relentlessly positive self-improvement. [That] reading is good because it makes you good. To think of reading in this reductive way is insulting, both to books and to their readers. Being good, or becoming better - how can anyone think this is the limit of the literary imagination.” Reading in and of itself, is not positive, or negative. Yes there are benefits, my larger than normal vocabulary when I was younger is an example, but the act of reading does not make you better than anyone else. Nor does reading one genre over another. There are plenty of people out there who only read the fluffiest of romance who have a level of emotional intelligence that far exceeds some of the most avid self-help readers. On the other hand, I have read things that were outright bad for me. Sad things when I didn’t need another drop in that ocean, angry things that made me feel more hopeless than I am, things I thought woul

79%PREORDER NOTE - Publish Date is November 4th, 2025. By preordering you will be reserving your copy for pickup at Slant of Light Books after the publish date. From internationally renowned, award-winning author Salman Rushdie, a spellbinding exploration of life, death, and what comes into focus at the proverbial eleventh hour of life Rushdie turns his extraordinary imagination to life’s final act with a quintet of stories that span the three countries in which he has made his work—India, England, and America—and feature an unforgettable cast of characters. “In the South” introduces a pair of quarrelsome old men—Junior and Senior—and their private tragedy at a moment of national calamity. In “The Musician of Kahani,” a musical prodigy from the Mumbai neighborhood featured in Midnight’s Children uses her magical gifts to wreak devastation on the wealthy family she marries into. In “Late,” the ghost of a Cambridge don enlists the help of a lonely student to enact revenge upon the tormentor of his lifetime. “Oklahoma” plunges a young writer into a web of deceit and lies as he tries to figure out whether his mentor killed himself or faked his own death. And “The Old Man in the Piazza” is a powerful parable for our times about freedom of speech. Do we accommodate ourselves to death, or rail against it? Do we spend our “eleventh hour” in serenity or in rage? And how do we achieve fulfillment with our lives if we don’t know the end of our own stories? The Eleventh Hour ponders life and death, legacy and identity with the penetrating insight and boundless imagination that have made Salman Rushdie one of the most celebrated writers of our time.
