83%Suzy Farren: The Past is a Foreign Country\nEmailnbsp; |nbsp;nbsp;Facebooknbsp; |nbsp; Instagram\nA reception will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, 1:30 PM - 3 PM\nAbout the Exhibit\n“The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.”nbsp; The Go-Between, a novel by LP Hartley and a film by Joseph Losey, begins with thosenbsp;words: I saw the movie when I was in my early twenties, and it made a lasting impression. The world we knew when we were young is not the world we know now. Things werenbsp;different then; simpler. When I began expressing myself visually, I was drawn to earth colors reminiscent of the fields of New Jersey I roamed as a child. During the isolation that was COVID, Inbsp;discovered color. Its appeal came, I think, from an indefinable spark – from a time older than memory -- buried deep within me. When I paint, I’m like a child. As each canvasnbsp;develops its own unique character, I respond to the unfolding colors, the textures, the shapes. A stroke of paint here, a found scrap of paper there; the repetitive process ofnbsp;reflecting and responding eventually yields a finished piece. While this intuitive spirit guides me as I paint, my stitched work is characterized by memory. I am drawn to scraps that hearken to a simpler time: a piece of an old recipe, a snippet of old cloth, a segment of an old letter – things with past lives, once cherished, nbsp;now forgotten. I’m thrilled to stitch them together to give them new life.\nBio\nI spent my career as a writer/executive before turning to visual art prior to retiring. After taking a variety of classes in the arts, I gravitated first to hand stitching and later to mixed media painting and collage. When a friend asked me to create a piece for an art auction, I was incredulous. In my wildest dreams I had never pictured myself as an artist. Her request required anbsp;significant shift in mindset. Could I possibly think of myself as an artist? I began taking more classes and entering art
