Under Rule 5.05 (a) (7), a lodged ball happens when a batted ball gets stuck in a fence, scoreboard, shrubbery, or behind a tarp or padding on the field, halting its trajectory enough to affect play, as judged by the umpire, awarding runners two bases from the pitch time. Retrieval ease doesn’t matter, and the call, subject to replay review, stands if clear; umpires stop play if the ball is visibly lodged, otherwise play continues until inspected, though minor leagues lack replay.
