中国科学院近代物理研究所创建于1957年，是一个依托大科学装置，主要从事重离子物理基础和重离子束应用研究、相应发展先进粒子加速器及核技术的基地型研究所。经过半个多世纪的发展，已经成为在国际上有重要影响的重离子科学研究中心。目前，近代物理研究所还协同国内相关单位，承担着中国科学院a类战略性先导科技专项“未来先进核裂变能－ads嬗变系统”任务。近代物理研究所通过几代人的不懈努力和三项大科学工程建设，建成了兰州重离子加速器（hirfl）国家重大科技基础设施，主要技术指标达到国际先进水平，为我国重离子物理及交叉学科研究创造了先进的实验条件，取得了以新核素合成、原子核质量精确测量、重离子治癌为代表的一批重要科研成果，使我国进入重离子物理及交叉学科研究的国际先进行列。
