When the first storm hit, the house filled with water, swallowing belongings, appliances, and cherished books. When we realized the extent of the destruction, we drove up at 4:00 in the morning, unaware that we wouldn’t be able to access the barrier islands, now swallowed by the sea. We hitched a ride from strangers on a boat just to reach the interior island and assess the damage. What we found was nearly unbearable. For nearly 24 hours, we wrung out water, pausing only for brief moments of sleep. With the power out and the windows open to the storm’s fury, the devastation was absolute. We thought that was the beginning of our healing, but then came Milton. He finished what Helene had started—ripping out the seawall, wrecking the dock, and blasting through the garage door.
