91%Christian clergy played an important role in creating, supporting, and eventually disrupting apartheid in South Africa. Immediately post-1948, despite the threat of repression, there were a few examples of defiance, including statements and participation in protests. However, the larger wave of defections only began after the Sharpeville Massacre, with previously apathetic actors leveraging their voices and networks to critique apartheid, often coming into opposition with their superiors. These statements were driven by a Christian ethos centered on equality before God; the number of statements continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 80s. Actors in the US should note how the incremental and cautious nature of the initial defections, while disappointing to those seeking more wholesale change, nevertheless enabled and motivated larger chains of defections. Accordingly, this case suggests that leaders who “merely” condemn political violence can turn out to be crucial first movers. A second lesson concerns the power of religious language: the appeals by South African clergy to God’s law were important in convincing their laity to condemn or disobey the laws of apartheid.
