Not specifically. Our charge is to understand characteristics of the Earth, especially the Earth's surface, that affect our Nation's land, water, and biological resources. That includes quite a bit of environmental monitoring. Other agencies, especially NOAA and NASA, are specifically funded to monitor global temperature and atmospheric phenomena such as ozone concentrations. The work through programs of our Land Resources mission (Land Change Science, National Land Imaging and Climate Adaptation Science Centers) focus on understanding the likely consequences of climate change, especially by studying how climate has changed in the past.

In September of 2024, Artist-at-Sea Jill Pelto joined a deep-sea expedition. Pelto is an artist and science communicator based in Washington. She was intrigued by the opportunity to study the underwater effects of a 2008 volcanic eruption that dramatically transformed the landscape and lives of the people of Chaitén, Chile.

This expedition carries us to the Western Pacific, exploring some of the oldest seamounts on Earth. While exploring the mountain slopes at nearly the depth limit for ROV Hercules on an unnamed seamount east of the Mariana Trench, our Corps of Exploration witnessed some of the region's unique, remarkable deep-sea diversity and geological structure. At 3,795 meters (12,450 feet) deep, we spotted a deep-sea tripodfish (Bathytyphlops sewelli).
