การเคลื่อนไหวกระดูกส่วนอก ในชีวิตประจำวันของเรามักจะมีแต่การเคลื่อนไหวร่างกาย ก้มไปด้านหน้าเป็นส่วนใหญ่ เช่น นั่งอ่านหนังสือหรือใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ เอื้อมมือหยิบของทางด้านหน้า ทำให้ขาดการเคลื่อนไหวทิศอื่นๆ และถ้าหากข้อต่อขาดการเคลื่อนไหวเป็นเวลานาน จะทำให้เนื้อเยื่อรอบๆข้อต่อ ทั้งกล้ามเนื้อ (muscles ), เอ็นที่หุ้มอยู่รอบข้อต่อ (joint capsule) รวมถึงพังผืด หรือเนื้อเยื่อเกี่ยวพัน (fascia) ขาดความยืดหยุ่น และยิ่งปล่อยให้ร่างกายขาดการเคลื่อนไหวไปเรื่อยๆ ถูกจำกัดในท่าเดิมๆ จนข้อต่อเคลื่อนไหวได้น้อยลง (hypomobility) และอาจนำไปสู่ภาวะข้อต่อยึดติด (joint stiffness) ซึ่งอาการที่มักพบได้บ่อยคือ มีอาการหลังตึง รู้สึกติดขัดเวลาเอี้ยวตัว บิดหมุน หายใจได้ไม่ทั่วท้อง หรืออาจมีอาการปวดเมื่อยเรื้อรังได้ ปัญหาขาดความสามารถในการเคลื่อนไหวนี้ ไม่ได้อยู่แค่ที่กระดูกสันหลัง แต่ยังเป็นสาเหตุของอาการปวดคอบ่าไหล่ และภาวะไหล่ห่อ หลังค่อม หรือ ภาวะ office syndrome รวมถึงภาวะข้อไหล่ติด อาการแสดงที่สามารถสังเกตได้ คือ เวลายกแขน หรือเอาแขนไขว้หลังแล้วรู้สึกติดขัด นั่นเป็นเพราะว่าข้อไหล่และหลังส่วนบนระดับอกของเรานั้นถูกเชื่อมติดกัน เมื่อกระดูกสันหลังขาดความยืดหยุ่น เคลื่อนไหวได้ไม่ดี ข้อไหล่ก็จะเคลื่อนไหวได้น้อยลงด้วย อีกปัญหาที่พบได้บ่อยมาก คืออาการปวดหลังล่าง ปวดตึงหลัง รู้สึกเอวสองข้างไม่เท่ากัน
