This legendary Springbank Local Barley was distilled in January 1965, and what makes it truly extraordinary is the story of its origins — almost every ingredient and resource used in its creation was sourced from within an eight-mile radius of the distillery. The barley came from Machrimore Farm and was malted on-site at Springbank, dried using peat cut from the Aros Moss at the Rhoin. The mashing water was drawn from Crosshill Loch, nestled on the slopes of Ben Ghuilean above Limecraigs, while the coal used to heat both the mashing water and the stills was mined at the Argyll Colliery in Trodigal, near Machrihanish. The one notable exception to this hyperlocal philosophy was the refill cask — Cask No. 8 — in which the spirit quietly matured in Springbank's warehouses over the decades. After 36 years of maturation, the whisky was finally bottled in September 2001 at natural cask strength, with no chill-filtration, fining, or artificial colouring applied. Each of these choices alone would mark it as an exceptional release — together, they make it something genuinely rare. What seals its status as a truly unrepeatable whisky is the closure of the Machrihanish coal mine, which has been shut for many years with no prospect of ever reopening. The precise combination of local ingredients, traditional methods, and now-vanished resources means this Springbank can never be replicated.
