100%2023 Fire Prevention Campaign: This year’s Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking. Cooking Safety: Did you know? Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths. What can you do? The good news is you can prevent most cooking fires and burns. Help keep your family safer with some simple but effective tips. Importance of Fire Prevention: In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire. About Fire Prevention Week: Since 1922, the NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. 100%An early morning dispatch for a building fire at the Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville sent multiple fire units to the scene. The first call was alerted at 7:27 am on Saturday to Sykesville's Box 12-01. Apparatus from Sykesville, Winfield, Gamber, Howard, and Baltimore Counties were alerted. Sykesville units arrived promptly and declared a working fire while also requesting a RID dispatch. Gamber & Community Fire Co. responded with Engines 131 and 134 on the initial dispatch and the RID assignment. Engine 131 supplied Sykesville's Tower 12 with water. Crews then discovered a second fire in an adjacent building and command requested a second alarm. This brought additional units from across Carroll County and neighboring jurisdictions. Both buildings were vacant but were searched for possible victims. Engine 131's crew helped extinguish the fire in the exposure building then assisted with the main fire building. Engine 134 then set up at a hydrant and supplied water to other units. Several hydrants were found to be inoperable so a tanker task force was also requested. Tanker 13 from Gamber responded at that time. No injuries were reported during this incident. Deputies from the Office of the State Fire Marshal were on scene investigating the cause and origin of the fires. 100%National Poison Prevention Week raises awareness of poison prevention nationwide during the third full week of March every year. The week is an opportunity to highlight the dangers of poisonings for people of all ages. The third full week in March has been designated National Poison Prevention Week, focusing national attention on the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1961, National Poison Prevention Week is commissioned by the National Poison Prevention Week Council. Each year, more than 2 million poisonings are reported to the Nation’s poison control centers. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, 93 percent of poisonings happen at home, and 45 percent of poisonings involve children under the age of 6. The majority of fatal poisonings occur among adults, especially older adults. In the United States, poison control centers handle 1 call every 13 seconds. To prevent these poisonings from happening to you or a loved one, parents, teachers, nurses, and everyone in the community should take measures to ensure that unintentional poisonings are being prevented. A few ways to prevent a poisoning from happening include placing household chemicals out of the reach of children, storing items in their original containers to avoid confusion, and reading product labels, including the recommended dosages on all products. Older adults should take special precautions to understand medication safety. More than 90 percent of the time, poisonings happen in people’s homes. The majority of these poisonings occur in the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. That is why it is important to follow simple steps to prevent a poisoning from happening at home. Teach your family to never touch or put anything in their mouths unless they know what it is. Below are additional tips on how to keep poisonous items safe in your home. Medicines: • Keep all medicines, and potentially poisonous substances, in locked cabinets or o
