His newest Ibanez-designed guitar represents a shift from his older dual-humbucker instrument with Titan humbuckers to a double-blade, Strat-style pickup for the neck and a humbucker in the bridge. The Mirage pickups are the next step in that journey. Jake loves DiMarzio's The Chopper™, but he needed a tweak: a pickup that would function the same way in the angled neck position of his new guitar. He wanted a super saturated single coil sound that was a mix between The Cruiser™ and The Chopper™ models. Enter the Mirage™ Neck. This fully humbucking pickup features a bell-like top end for smoothness and an opened-up bass for balance. Jake also requested slightly more output to keep up with his Mirage™ Bridge pickup, and the result is an unstoppable combo. Another twist on a classic design. This pickup is modeled after some of the earliest Plank'casters. It can go from smooth and dignified to rude and unrefined, depending on your mood. .195 Alnico III flat pole magnets, wound to 9.5K with 43 gauge Plain Enamel wire. The output of this pickup isn't as high as the resistance numbers would suggest, although it is on the hot side of things. The result is a tone that is distinctly edgier, more vibrant, and a tad darker than stock Telecaster bridge pickups. Great for thicker, sharper leads and cutting rhythms - this pickup really has a pleasant "edge" to the treble frequencies, and offers new harmonic dimensions for lead work. Cleans up nicely though for more sophisticated settings. Mates up nicely with the Big Boy neck pickup. Redd Volkaert uses this model exclusively along with the Big Boy neck pickup.
