83%I really loved this book. I have been waiting for its release since I started reading the advanced copy we received in the mail. I rarely read memoirs, I don’t usually enjoy them, but how could I resist the title? Bibliophobia - I couldn’t not pick it up. And I am so glad I did. This is a memoir of writing, anguish, depression, growing into oneself, and books and books and books. It’s not often I get a real detailed look into someone's relationship with books - it’s not often I’m prompted to interrogate my own - and it was a wonderful whirlwind of book recommendations and distress. This is not a light story. It begins with the author being institutionalized and ends hopeful but unsure. But it is so worth the read. I don’t have the same relationship with books that this author does. Our relationship is vastly more positive than not. That's not to say every book I've read has been good for me. For one thing, and I don’t think I can say it better than the author, “I am disturbed and irritated whenever I encounter the moralizing claim that the main point of reading…is relentlessly positive self-improvement. [That] reading is good because it makes you good. To think of reading in this reductive way is insulting, both to books and to their readers. Being good, or becoming better - how can anyone think this is the limit of the literary imagination.” Reading in and of itself, is not positive, or negative. Yes there are benefits, my larger than normal vocabulary when I was younger is an example, but the act of reading does not make you better than anyone else. Nor does reading one genre over another. There are plenty of people out there who only read the fluffiest of romance who have a level of emotional intelligence that far exceeds some of the most avid self-help readers. On the other hand, I have read things that were outright bad for me. Sad things when I didn’t need another drop in that ocean, angry things that made me feel more hopeless than I am, things I thought woul
