Een eigenzinnige botaniste die geen afleiding kan gebruiken en een cowboy die vastberaden is zijn hart niet te verliezen. Wat kan er misgaan?   In de historische roman 'Een gevaarlijke missie' van Jody Hedlund gaat de eigenwijze Linnea Newberry samen met haar grootvader, dr. Powell, op botanische expeditie langs de Santa Fe trail richting Colorado. Ze verlangt ernaar gewaardeerd te worden voor haar wetenschappelijke onderzoek, maar tot haar frustratie dreigt haar grootvader haar bij het minste of geringste voorval direct naar huis te sturen. Nadat hij zijn moeder heeft zien sterven in het kraambed is Flynn McQuaid vastbesloten om nooit te trouwen of kinderen te krijgen. Nu hij richting Colorado trekt heeft hij zijn handen vol aan de zorg voor zijn broertjes en zusjes. Afleiding in de vorm van een knappe botaniste is dus wel het laatste wat Flynn kan gebruiken. Wanneer Linnea door Flynn wordt gered van verdrinking huurt dr. Powell hem meteen in om zijn kleindochter voor verder gevaar te beschermen. Linnea weet hier niets van af en begrijpt niet waarom deze cowboy haar plots zo in de gaten houdt. Terwijl Flynn Linnea onder zijn hoede neemt, moet hij niet vergeten zijn eigen hart te bewaken voor het grootste gevaar: vallen voor deze aantrekkelijke vrouw.
