Hamilton has witnessed a steady disappearance of its queer nightlife infrastructure over the last few decades. Legacy spaces and pioneers of the local scene—including Billie's Place, The Warehouse, The Werx, The Embassy, and the short-lived Steel Lounge—have all shut down. Since 1990, a series of closures marked by police raids, bomb threats, "sold" signs, and abrupt shutdowns have fundamentally altered the city’s queer social landscape. Today, while a handful of queer-friendly venues like Club 77 or the Cotton Factory remain active, a designated, permanent queer bar or club is increasingly difficult to find. In response to the decline of dedicated real estate, a collective of local creatives is reimagining what queer communities can look like without a fixed address. Cult Heroes, self-described as "Hamilton's queer party cult," has emerged as a nomadic guild redefining queer nightlife through pop-up events. Founded by Drew Beaupre, Mikey Gough, Axel Curtieis, Grace Kakarelis, and Casey Gough, Cult Heroes organizes immersive and theatrical pop-up events that lean into spectacle and self-expression, using temporality to create fleeting but intentional spaces of belonging.
