Each vintage of RSW is crafted from exceptional McLaren Vale Shiraz vineyards. The 2022 release consists of fruit from four blocks, three of which are from Wirra Wirra’s biodynamic Sandhill Vineyard. This north-facing vineyard, located just a stone’s throw from the winery, features a gentle slope with sandy loam over clay. While the blocks are neighbouring, each offers a distinctive expression of Shiraz. The final component comes from the elevated Blewitt Springs district, planted in 1969 on sandy soil. All four blocks were hand-harvested and vinified separately in open fermenters, with whole bunch inclusion and extended skin contact. The wine matured in French oak barriques (33% new) for 18 months. RSW honours Robert Strangways Wigley who established Wirra Wirra in 1894 after leaving Adelaide following a series of ‘adventures’ that were starting to impact his family’s good name. Winemaking turned out to be the making of RSW and he built an impressive winery and established a reputation for making world class wines in the burgeoning wine region of McLaren Vale.
