- Splat-O-Nym Vs. Syllables Splash
Splat-O-Nym 與 Syllables Splash 使用情況與統計
Splat-O-Nym is an engaging, independent vocabulary game that helps students learn synonyms and antonyms through four fun activities: Synonym Splat, Antonym Attack, Context Contest, and Lightning Round. Students enter the game in level one of the Synonym Splat activity and move up and down through the 24 levels and between the four game activities based on their performance. The game keeps track of total points, saves the level and points for up to six students between sessions, and generates a Results report that provides a snapshot of a student's performance in the game after each Lightning Round. In all activities but the Lightning Round, students can switch to listening mode and tap on words they would like to hear read for them.
Synonym Splat
The student splats (taps on) the synonym for each target word presented earning points for correct answers and losing points for incorrect ones. Splatting the correct synonym for four target words in a level (levels 1-12) or five target words in a level (levels 13-24) before tapping two wrong answers moves the student to the next level. Tapping a word that is not a synonym for two target words in a level (before splatting correct synonyms for four target words) moves the student down a level. A splatted synonym remains on the screen with its target word for a moment to reinforce the connection between the words. Target words for which the student tapped an incorrect answer come back after a couple of new target words to give the student another chance to splat the synonym. If the student taps an incorrect word again, the synonym remains on the screen for a moment with its target word to help the student learn the correct answer.
Context Contest
If the student taps a word that is not the correct synonym for two target words in a level, Splat-O-Nym presents the Context Contest. This game gives the student a chance to earn back the points lost on the two wrong answers by popping the bubble of the synonym of a target word as it is used in a sentence.
Antonym Attack
When the student earns enough points playing Synonym Splat, Splat-O-Nym presents Antonym Attack. In this activity, the student zaps each of three monsters carrying a target word flag by sliding the correct antonym into the horn and tapping it. Tapping on a word that is not the correct antonym for the target word causes the monster to growl and the word to bounce back to the horn. The student slides and taps word options until tapping the correct antonym for the target word. Splat-O-Nym awards points based on the total number of antonyms tapped correctly the first time.
Lightning Round
Each time the student accumulates 20 splatted target words, Splat-O-Nym presents a Lightning Round with those 20 target words. During the Lightning Round, the student taps as many synonyms as he or she can in 30 seconds. Splat-O-Nym awards points based on the total number of synonyms tapped correctly in 30 seconds.

Syllable Splash is a fun and engaging way to teach children the important skill of syllable segmentation. A multiplayer app designed with younger children in mind, Syllable Splash is colorful, fun, and easily adapted to the child’s zone of proximal development. With nearly 1000 images and words from one to four syllables in length, Syllable Splash is sure to provide many opportunities for learning this fundamental skill while the fun under-the-sea theme helps keep the child engaged.
How to play
With each turn, an image or word is displayed on the viewing window of the underwater submersible. The child decides how many syllables the word has by choosing the correct number (1, 2, 3, or 4). If the child chooses incorrectly, a mini-animation eliminates the wrong choice.
Customization
Syllable Splash is customizable from the opening screen and inside the app itself. From the opening screen, the adult can choose the level of syllable difficulty (1-4) and the response for an incorrect answer. From inside the app, the adult can choose between an image or, for the older student, the written word.
Syllable Splash also includes a setting that will automatically adapt to fit the child’s skill level. In the beginning, the adult has the choice of the number of foils (incorrect choices) available (1-3) and to automatically increase the difficulty. If the child scores 10 correct answers in a row, the app will automatically add another foil (up to 3). This is an easy way of increasing the difficulty level to keep it within the child’s zone of proximal development.
At the end of the session, a report card is generated indicating how the student has done. This report card is stored within the app; however, it can be exported into the Therapy Report Center, emailed, or printed from within the app as well. The report card is a useful tool for progress monitoring and report writing.
Purpose
The purpose for Syllable Splash is to encourage literacy skills and phonological awareness. Phonological awareness and syllable knowledge are important for breaking long words into readable chunks1. Many children without these skills may resort to guessing or bypassing the word completely2. In addition, Syllable counting is an integral skill necessary for the Kindergarten/First grade Language Foundations area of the Common Core State Standards3. Syllable Splash allows the parent, SLP, or teacher to teach this basic skill many of children are lacking. When the adult continues asking questions about the picture, the student is encouraged to expand language skills.
Syllable Splash has the following features
•High-quality images and engaging animation designed to capture the attention of the student.
•Literacy enhancement through visual print and phonological awareness development.
•Receptive language building by potentially exposing children to new vocabulary.
•Expressive language building through discussing the presented pictures.
•Data collection for each student.
•Compatibility with Therapy Report Center for easy report writing and progress monitoring.
•Customizable to fit therapy needs
