Explore the live map and learn about different sharks and their stories, see photos and view their migration over time. FAQs: Q: Why hasn't a shark moved in x days/weeks/months? A: Locations only occur when a shark's dorsal fin, and thus the satellite tag, break the surface of the ocean and link to satellites in orbit. It isn't uncommon for the sharks to spend weeks underwater before coming to surface again. Q: How accurate are locations? The longer the tag is above the water, the more accurate a location fix from satellites. Highly accurate locations are to within <250m while some very brief satellite fixes make locations only accurate to several kilometres which is why, at times, some shark locations may appear to be 'on the land' but it is due to lower accuracy locations, near the coast. Q: What does purchasing this app do? A: The app will always be free to access on our website sustainableoceansociety.co.nz . Purchasing the app funds future tagging of the sharks, continued conservation efforts and development of the app. The Sustainable Oceans Society is on a mission to study how the way we live affects the oceans and its inhabitants.
