Join us Wednesday, July 16th, for special open hours and a live performance by Kumi James (BAE BAE) and Shivani Desai (Sonic Warfare). Operation Wandering Soul was a psyop military operation conducted by the U.S. military against Vietnamese soldiers during the Vietnam War, where manufactured recordings of dead soldiers were amplified, exploiting the belief that the dead had to be buried in ancestral burial ground or be cursed to wander aimlessly forever. Kumi James and Shivani Desai's performance considers how sound can induce alienation but can also be a salve. Drone and noise blurs with sampled 60s surf rock and psychedelia to create a live soundtrack for ever-evolving American militarism. Operation Wandering Soul is presented as part of Fugue Zones, an exhibition by Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste, DeForrest Brown Jr., and Steve Goodman (Kode9). The immersive installation invites visitors to question the ways in which audio devices - once designed for military use - have made their way into the consumer world, now reshaping our sensory experiences.
