Mit Calantha® (Wirkstoff: Ledprona) hat GreenLight Biosciences 2023 in den USA die Zulassung für das weltweit erste RNAi-Spray erhalten. Eine aktuelle Studie von GreenLight Biosciences, dem Fraunhofer-Institut für Molekularbiologie und Angewandte Oekologie IME (Abteilung Bioressourcen) und der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen erläutert den Wirkmechanismus. Das Spray schaltet gezielt ein lebenswichtiges Gen im Kartoffelkäfer aus und löst darüber hinaus einen bisher nicht beschriebenen sekundären Effekt aus, der zu einer tödlichen Anreicherung von Proteinen im Körper des Insekts führt. Die Studie belegt die Spezifität der dsRNA und identifiziert die durch die Herunterregulierung verursachte nachfolgende Proteasom-Fehlfunktion als Wirkmechanismus von Ledprona.
