Above you, right now, two trillion galaxies are spinning in silence. A dying star sent out its last light three thousand years ago, and it’s only now reaching your eyes. A comet is returning for the first time since the days of ancient Rome. Seven astronauts are eating dinner four hundred kilometers above your head, and their Station will cross your sky in exactly eleven minutes. The sky was never empty. We just didn’t know how to look. That’s what Sirius was made for. The app knows where you are, what time the Sun will set, where the Moon will rise, which clouds are rolling in tomorrow, and how much light your city spills into the atmosphere. It combines your GPS position, local weather, the world atlas of light pollution, the magnitude of every object, and the gear you own (naked eye, binoculars, or telescope) to tell you about your sky and nothing else. Not some abstract planetarium from a middle-school science class. The sky above your head, tonight. You’ll know if Saturn is visible tonight, and until what time. You’ll know if the Orion Nebula will break through your city’s glow, or if you’ll need to drive somewhere darker to see it. You’ll know that next Tuesday, a meteor shower will fall over the Northern Hemisphere, and that you’ll have to get up at 4 a.m. not to miss a thing. And when something extraordinary is on its way, Sirius lets you know. The ISS about to pass overhead. An aurora whose odds suddenly jump above 70% at your latitude. An asteroid grazing Earth tonight. A supernova spotted last night in a galaxy you’d never heard of. A solar flare about to light up the upper atmosphere. You pick the topics you care about, and the app keeps an ear out for you. Sirius also keeps track of what’s coming. A calendar lays out the next thirty days: every eclipse, every conjunction, every full moon, every upcoming planetary opposition. Observation missions invite you to aim your gaze at specific objects, like a cosmic scavenger hunt. And every day, a news feed brings you what’s stirring in space science: the latest exoplanet discovery, the mission about to launch, the image fresh from the great telescopes. All around you, others are looking up too. A gallery brings together amateur astrophotographers and their shots: the Milky Way over the Pyrenees, M31 captured from a balcony in Montreuil, a partial eclipse caught with a telephoto lens on a Sunday morning. And you can join in. Share your own photos, tell the story of your night out, show what you saw tonight, from your backyard or from a summit in the Alps. Others comment, like, reply. You’re no longer watching the community from the sidelines; you’re part of it. Looking at the sky has always been a shared experience. Sirius is just trying to bring that back. The app is free, with no ads. You don’t need a telescope. You don’t need to know the constellations. You don’t need to be anyone special to deserve what’s happening above you. All you have to do is look up. Sirius. The universe in your pocket.
