05/01/26 - For sale is an Inland M1 Carbine made in 1944. The rifle retains a nice parkerized finish, with it wearing to a light grey/bare metal. The stock has been lightly sanded but is in good shape overall. The stock is marked PJ and UEF/GHD for Underwood. There is a repair behind the tang, but also a small crack that loops around back to the tang.  The bore is bright with good rifling. The rifling is showing wear towards the muzzle, and some prickling of old corrosion is visible. The rifle was rebuilt after the war and is a mix of makers and variations.

It all started with an email telling me that this Veteran's son had a rare and unusual item from WWII that he was considering selling. Once I read the details, I decided I really needed to pursue this artifact. He told me that his dad, Ensign William Kaiser, was a United States blimp pilot during the war with Blimp Squadron 14, also known as ZP-14. His Dad's unit was part of a six-airship unit to make the first transatlantic crossing in 1944. His airship K-123 started from the Naval Air base in South Weymouth, MA, then flew to Newfoundland, the Azores and then to French Morocco. Because they landed in French Morocco, they became known as "The Africa Squadron". After that, they were stationed in southern France. They participated in anti-submarine warfare, rescue missions and reconnaissance. His son Bruce said his dad’s crew loved to drop depth charges on U-Boats or whales for "target practice." His unit transferred to an airbase in southern France in the city of Cuers. The airbase had been occupied by the Germans and there was a Forke Wolfe 190 that had been abandoned. Before he returned home he decided to take a souvenir from the aircraft. This was a two foot by two foot section of the tailfin.  In order to maintain discretion, he carefully removed the section from the other side of the plane from the original photo shown. He recorded the details on the back of the section he cut off.     It's interesting that an internet search reveals that the airbase is still active and the blimp hangars are still there. I was able to purchase the tail section along with the original photo of his dad with other crew members standing next to the actual plane. Fortunately, the son lived within driving distance of us which facilitated the transaction. I sent my ferret, Gene Brunelle, to pick up the tail section and while discussing the exchange, Bruce, Mr. Kaiser's son, said he also had his Dad's leather jacket with squadron patch and his issue steel helmet. GR-0625-6607, Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech Carbine. AKA The John Brown Model. .52 cal percussion. It is brass mounted with a brass patch-box with a rich wonderful patina. It has the correct length, 21 ½ inch barrel. The rest of the gun is covered in a rich dark patina with patches of fine surface residue on the barrel and frame. There are scattered light bumps and dings to the stock with some minor chips. moSt of the stock is covered with untouched patina and light residue. There is an old crack that must have been repaired in the stock. It was either repaired or was not a structural problem so it was left alone. The stock feels structurally sound. The bore is bright, shiny, crisply rifled with scattered light surface residue in the bore. Very good as is and may clean better. Serial number 21xxx. I love untouched brass with a rich wonderful patina and the brass on this gun definitely meets that criteria. The gun overall is in untouched condition, not brand new condition but a gun that was used, carried and then stored for a very long time and not messed with or ever cleaned. The mechanics are functional. The elevator is missing on the rear site. This is a gun that is hard to find. Only 10,000 were made and not many survived. Very good overall. Est. Retail Value: $3750
