This rule exists to prevent information from those who have quit to have a “bad influence” on those who are still believers. It also exists to isolate former believers who have left the community, in an attempt to encourage them to return because of it. For me however, it served the purpose of allowing me to act freely. Your son’s circumstances were ultimately what persuaded you to leave the organization. If he were to want to join it himself, would you accept it? I have done my best not to conceal any of my reasons for quitting the religion from my son. I have also told him that we have relatives who still believe in it, and that disharmony has arisen as a result of that before - but I still don’t love them any less. If - knowing all of that - he were still to choose that path, I wouldn’t have any right to stop him. Of course, I would be sure to fully explain the risks of following that faith, but my son and I are different individuals, and I don’t believe I can step in and make life decisions for him. Whatever road my son may choose, I intend to watch over him, and offer help should he ever need it.
