By A Staff Reporter LONDON May 8: A Keralite doctor has started a charity to raise awareness about the dangers of diabetes after losing her mum to the ‘killer’ illness. Dr Veena Babu lost her mother Helen Babu last year. The loss was so much painful for her that she decided to raise awareness among the community about the dangers of diabetes so that no other person will have to go through it again. Dr Veena set up SADAH (South Asian Diabetes Association), a charitable organisation to honour the memory of her late mother Helen Babu (5.02.57 – 1.06.22). Helen endured dire complications of end stage Type 2 diabetes and battled every ailment with courage and conviction right until the end. Dr Veena wants her mother’s grit to live on through the positive work that she and her team do through SADAH. Following her mother’s death Dr Veena did more research, and she learnt that “we’re six times more likely to have Type 2 Diabetes in comparison to the general population and also the fact that there are approximately three million diabetic South Asian patients in the UK”. She says: “And while people understand that you can die of cancer and dementia, I’ve found that they don’t seem to understand that you can similarly die of diabetes. Even as a doctor, I didn’t think it would happen to her. Yet, there were 140,775 diabetes-related deaths in 2021 alone. “I knew I had to do something. I hadn’t been able to save Mum, but there were literally millions of people out there I could help and educate. That was why I set up my charity, SADAH. It’s a word that means ‘forever’ in Hindi, but it also stood for The South Asian Diabetes Association in memory of Helen”. Helen belongs to the Muttathupadam family of Kudamaloor in Kottayam. Her husband Babu Moolakattu is a native of Chethipuzha near Changanassery. Dr Veena Babu is practicing in London. Her younger sister Geena Ann Babu works as a marketing executive within the NHS.
