BelgaHAY Radio began its life in 2016 under the aegis of Radio Campus, broadcasting in Armenian for two hours each week on FM frequency 92.1. The shows got underway thanks to the efforts of Aris NALCI and Linda Yalman, and they have since evolved with the participation of Ashkhen Fixova Davtyan, Lilit Karapetyan, Carole Arissian and Suzanne Kananian. This project, created in response to the absence of an Armenian radio station in Belgium, took part in a competition organized by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles in 2020, and was selected among the 18 independent radio stations granted broadcasting rights in the region. In 2021, following the modernization of Belgium’s DAB+ infrastructure, the BelgaHAY project began full-time broadcasts in Armenian and French. This radio station—established with the aim of preserving, promoting, and developing Armenian culture—continues today thanks to the participation of many volunteers. The project seeks to build a bridge between Belgium’s Armenian community and the wider society, with the goal of promoting Armenian culture. Belgahay, your new radio station, was launched on November 4, 2022. It is intended to be neutral both politically and confessionally, excluding all extremist and fascist movements. Its primary purpose is to create a space for exchange and communication both within and beyond the community. It aims to become a platform dedicated to living together and fostering strong social cohesion. It also strives to be pluralistic in its programming and in the languages used, in order to give as many people as possible access to a variety of topics. Radio Belgahay also aspires to be a new media tool for Belgium’s Armenian community. It will aim to showcase its many facets—whether cultural, religious, musical, or otherwise. The transmission of memory and language are, of course, among the objectives your radio station pursues. The music programming is eclectic and addresses all generations and cultural backgrounds. It will continue to give ample space to Armenian creation around the world (pop, folk, classical, urban, etc.) while also offering popular international music.
