Description: Dorothy Kirsten was an ideal exponent of Puccini. Her slender voice had all of the steel needed to contend with the orchestral demands and she also brought a vulnerability that played well into the pathos of Puccini’s heroines. This vulnerability might have been a liability for her if she were singing Leonora or Aida but it aluminates the role of Tosca who, although tough, is also naive to the craven nature of humanity embodied in Scarpia. James King joins her as Cavaradossi proving, once again, that he could sing just about anything. Manuel Ausensi is an excellent Scarpia. Kudos also go to Anton Guadagno for crafting nuanced and vibrant pacing. The sound is very good. OD 11052-2
