Tesfaye Urgessa is an Ethiopian artist who creates compositions inspired by Ethiopian iconography and classical art which interact with socio-political and contemporary issues. The main focus of his canvases are imperfect and fragmented figures. Those are fascinating mirrors to our reality which point out human fragility and vulnerability. He started painting Christian figures, as there is a long tradition of Christian Church painting in Ethiopia. Tesfaye Urgessa sees Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, who also deal with the perception of the human form as his sources of inspiration.
