ริมถนนอเล็กซานเดอร์วอล์กที่มีต้นไม้ร่มรื่นเรียงรายภายในมหาวิทยาลัยเยล เมืองนิวเฮเวน สหรัฐอเมริกา ปรากฏอาคารสูงหกชั้นดูแปลกตา มีเพียงส่วนฐานเท่านั้นที่มีกระจกสีเข้มพอมองลอดผ่านไปได้ แต่เยื้องเข้าไปอยู่ใต้ร่มลึกเหมือนซุ่มซ่อน             เมื่อแหงนมองดูตัวอาคารโดยรวมจะพบว่าผนังภายนอกประกอบด้วยหินอ่อนสี่เหลี่ยมแผ่นใหญ่หลายแผ่นเรียงต่อกันจนเต็มพื้นที่ มีโครงสร้างอาคารหุ้มด้วยแกรนิตยึดแต่ละแผ่นเอาไว้ ต่อให้เดินวนไปรอบอาคารก็มองไม่เห็นหน้าต่าง มีเพียงแผ่นเหลี่ยมทึบที่ทักทายเราอย่างเคร่งขรึม อาคารที่ดูปิดทึบและทึมเทานี้ดูเหมือนคนเก็บตัวที่สงบเสงี่ยม ทว่าแต่ละปีมีผู้เข้าเยี่ยมชมอาคารนี้มากถึง 175,000 คนจากทั่วโลก           ที่นี่คือ ห้องสมุดไบเนคเก้ (Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library) สถานที่เก็บรักษาหนังสือและต้นฉบับหายากระดับโลก แต่หากลองสังเกตหน้าตาของอาคารแห่งนี้ กลับน่าสงสัยว่าทำไมห้องสมุดแห่งนี้ถึงดูไม่มีหน้าต่าง เสมือนพยายามปิดกั้นตัวเองจากโลกภายนอก และแม้จะเข้าไปด้านใน ก็พบว่าจะมีกระจกคอยกั้นระหว่างตัวเรากับหอคอยชั้นหนังสือ 6 ชั้นที่ตั้งอยู่ใจกลางอาคาร           ชวนให้เราตั้งคำถามว่า ‘ห้องสมุดไม่ได้มีไว้ให้คนเข้าไปหยิบจับหนังสือได้อย่างอิสระหรอกหรือ?’           ถ้าเปรียบว่าห้องสมุดไบเนคเก้เป็นคน แม้จะมีบุคลิกเหมือนคนเก็บตัวที่ดูเข้าถึงยาก แต่จริงๆ แล้วกลับมีเพื่อนรอบตัวมากมาย เพราะห้องสมุดแห่งนี้อยู่ในเครือข่ายห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัยเยล สถาบันการศึกษาที่ก่อร่างจากหนังสือ 417 เล่ม ที่พ่อค้า เอลิฮู เยล (Elihu Yale) บริจาคให้ เครือข่ายที่ว่านี้มีห้องสมุดรวมอยู่สิบกว่าแห่ง แต่ละแห่งมีความโดดเด่นด้านทรัพยากรความรู้ที่แตกต่างกัน แต่ต่างมีพันธกิจแกนกลางร่วมกันนั่นคือ ‘สร้างความก้าวหน้าด้านศึกษาผ่านความหลากหลายและความเชี่ยวชาญ’…
