After clearing the NEET UG exam, candidates must participate in a counselling process to secure admission to medical and dental colleges across India. The counselling process for NEET UG is held at two major levels — All-India Quota (AIQ) counselling and State Quota counselling. For the AIQ seats (typically 15% of total seats), the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts the counselling based on the All India Rank (AIR) secured in NEET. Eligible candidates must register on the MCC portal, fill in their choice of colleges and courses, pay the counselling fee, and lock their preferences within the deadline. Seat allotment is then done based on merit and availability. For the remaining 85% of seats (State Quota), each state medical counselling authority conducts its own counselling process. Here, candidates must register separately through the respective state’s counselling portal and follow the state’s schedule for choice filling, document verification, seat allotment and reporting. Many states also follow reservation policies for various categories as per government rules. Counselling typically occurs in multiple rounds — Round 1, Round 2, mop-up rounds and stray vacancy rounds — to fill as many seats as possible. If a candidate does not receive a seat in one round or wants a better choice, they may participate in subsequent rounds according to the rules and guidelines. During counselling, candidates must produce all valid documents (NEET scorecard, identity, educational certificates, category certificates) for verification before seat allotment is finalized. Once allotted a seat, students must report to the allotted college within the specified dates lest they lose their seat. The counselling process is as important as the exam itself, because even with good scores, admission is secured only after successful participation in the counselling and seat-allotment procedure.
